SHANGHAI NOVEMBER 9th 2010

NEW VIRTUAL WORLD FOR ARTISTS TO SHOWCASE THEIR WORK IN 3D GALLERIES

So, what is imit8?

Imit8 is a virtual world and online community built around the idea of going to exhibitions and meeting other art lovers – we’ve paired the latest in graphics technology with our own content management systems to create a new social world for art lovers.

How does it work?

Imit8 is a world for the visual arts – and for artists and art lovers to meet and socialise while viewing new exhibitions from all over the world. Bring your friends in and socialise – or make new friends who love the visual arts as well. Play some of our built in activities and games or just walk through the galleries, taking in the work of artists from all over the world.

How much does it cost?

Imit8 is free to join and enter – and you can create your own gallery for free as well.

There are no ongoing fees for access to imit8 or imit8 events. We do have a premium’ subscription if you want to build a bigger gallery than most, but if you don’t want to spend anything imit8 won’t nag you about it.

Who built this?

Imit8 is built and run by the Sine Wave Company. The Sine Wave Company, based in London and Shanghai, is a small technology company that has spent 4 years working on the open standards for a 3D Internet.

The company was founded in 2006 by Rohan Freeman. He was previously a director at Ingenious Media Plc, the largest media investment firm in Europe, and has written extensively on technology, art and entertainment for The Financial Times and Forrester Research. He is also founder of the Reform Club Science and Technology Committee.

PRESS RELEASE

SHANGHAI November 08 2010

www.sinewavecompany.com

Summary

The Sine Wave Company has created a new 3D virtual world and MMOG platform combining the ability of the Unity3D web player to embed in any browser and offer high quality graphics and gaming functionality with a scalable server architecture derived from Sine Wave’s own technology, and the scalable OpenSim platform.

The company has completed three deployments with the platform; a virtual world for art lovers called www.imit8.com (integrated with Facebook, Flickr and Wikipedia) a live music virtual world called www.reslive.com and a virtual world for the Indian market called www.gojiyo.com – representing over combined quarter of a million users.

The platform is now available for other virtual world, MMOG and social game developers, brand companies and entertainment companies who want to bring virtual worlds to the mass market in a regular web browser.

“We built the platform because we needed it. The Sine Wave Company has retailed virtual goods in virtual worlds since 2006. We wanted to break out of the ‘walled gardens’ of existing platforms and be able to embed virtual worlds in regular web browsers, just like a video file or a jpeg image.” comments Sine Wave Company CEO Rohan Freeman.

“Now with this platform users can step straight from a regular web page into a fully immersive 3D virtual world or MMOG, with all the graphical power of the Unity game engine, all the scalability of our server architecture and all the flexibility of a regular web environment.” He added.

“The platform can host up to 1,000 concurrent users per server (depending on the specifics of each deployment) and The Sine Wave Company now offers a hosting solution for up to 100,000 concurrent users.” said Adam Frisby, the company’s CTO.

Background

The Sine Wave Company, based in London and Shanghai, is a small technology company that has spent 4 years working on the open standards for a 3D Internet. The company’s CTO, Adam Frisby, is one of the founders of the OpenSimulator project.

The Sine Wave Company is also one of the world’s leading producers and retailers of virtual goods, with millions of virtual goods sold to consumers across multiple virtual worlds.

The company was founded in 2006 by Rohan Freeman. He was previously a director at Ingenious Media Plc, the largest media investment firm in Europe, and has written extensively on technology and entertainment for The Financial Times and Forrester Research. He is also founder of the Reform Club Science and Technology Committee.

13/10/08

MULTI GRID LIVE EVENT

Live event runs in OpenSim and Second Life simultaneously.

OVERVIEW

On Friday 10th October 2008 The Sine Wave Pub Quiz took place in Second Life and OpenSim at the same time.

Avatars from both grids competed to win a first prize of US $500

The show had participants from both grids submitting answers to film, music and general knowledge questions. The answers were automatically collected, sorted and scored by The Sine Wave Company’s robots. The ‘quiz master’ bots logged into Second Life and OpenSim were all controlled by the Sine Wave Actorbot system.

THE EVENT

The show ran for an hour. Sumax Mighty led from the first round. But victory came down to the last question; “In which country was the decimal system invented?” Kish Kas, lying in second place to Sumax, answered correctly (India) and the show ended with joint winners.

The first prize was US $ 500, split between the two winners. Sumax Mighty commented “The future is today. Welcome to The Sine Wave Company!”

Aubrey Figtree, who attended the event in Second Life, said “The quiz was a blast. I was never in with a chance of winning but it was great fun. Just like a pub quiz in meatspace. It’s a great way to meet people.”

The show was hosted by Easy Babcock, with live audio broadcasts in both grids.

Rohan Freeman, the CEO of the Sine Wave Company commented;

“It was amazing hosting a live event in two virtual worlds at once. Back in 2006 we did the largest live event in Second Life. In May this year we did the first live show in OpenSim. Now we’ve done the first event in two virtual worlds at once. It’s really exciting and we will be making it a regular event now.”

THE TECHNOLOGY

At a technical level, the event served as a scaling test in OpenSim, the open source virtual world.

Adam Frisby, CEO of Deepthink, an OpenSim hosting company commented;

“The test allowed us to fix a number of outstanding issues. We were able to isolate and fix several performance problems with the OpenSim software as a direct consequence. The server has shown a significant improvement in concurrent user performance. During the quiz we didn’t come close to using ten percent of the server resources.”

The OpenSim grid chosen for the event was OSGrid.org, a not-for-profit grid managed by Charles Krinkle, who said; “It is refreshing to see live events begin happening more on OSGrid. The more our sims and grids are used, the more useful test data we obtain to improve the software. I would like to encourage The Sine Wave Company and others to continue to use OSGrid.”

The event was also a test for the Sine Wave Company’s robot system. Allen Xiao of Sine Wave Company said “Our bots work in both grids and we can control them with one system. We had to hard code a few things this time because the assets in each grid have different UUIDs but we’ll address that going forwards.

NEXT STEPS

The next live show will be on Sunday 26th October at 1.00 pm PST / SLT (4.00 PM EST / 9.00 PM GMT)

The first prize will be USD $500

To attend, go to www.sinewavecompany.com/pubquiz

If you can find all the clues, hidden in nightclubs, guitar stores and gothic castles across the grid, you could win a guitar signed by all the bands at this year’s Download Festival.

Festival director, Stuart Galbraith said: “Having the Download Dog integrated into Second Life is a fantastic opportunity for both communities to interact and bring the Download Festival to a world wide audience. Our online community has made Download Festival the essential event that it is today and bringing this to a wider audience is a concept that is extremely exciting.”

Rohan Freeman of The Sine Wave Company, who are involved in the Dog’s venture into Second Life said of the competition “Second Life has tens of thousands rock and alternative fans doing weird and wonderful things. When Live Nation wanted to run a competition for all their people, it was easy to bring everything together and draw on the creativity of lots of people all at once. Second Life is a community, and the people building it care about that community. Feedback from citizens I am dealing with is excellent. Because we are getting them involved.”

Another Dimension Media Ltd (ADM) is pleased to announce that it has been successful in raising its first round of capital from private backers.

Established in July 2006, ADM, and it’s subsidiary The Sine Wave Company, has focused on software development and has already released its first collection of animations. The company is now developing its second wave of products and animations for release whilst negotiating first look deals with various media companies and IP owners.

Adam Frisby, whose appointment is effective from February, will work with the Company to develop advanced applications. Adam has 6 years’ experience in the programming of applications relating to 3D virtual worlds. He initially developed with a group of programmers a method of accessing the Second Life services from external applications, and has established an open source future for the platform in partnership with, and with the active encouragement of Linden Labs.

Commenting on the investment and the recent appointment, Rohan Freeman, CEO commented:

“This is a major step forward for Another Dimension Limited as this capital will allow us to further develop our presence across the platforms.”

“I am delighted that Adam has decided to join the Company at this important stage in its development. He is on the cutting edge of this technology and will make a tremendous contribution to the Company as it continues to roll out its products and services in the coming months and years.”
